There are approximately 9.5 million native Swedish speakers worldwide; the modern Swedish language is spoken in both Sweden and Finland and is easily understood by native Danish and Norwegian speakers.
An Indo-European language, belonging to the Germanic family, Swedish became distinguishable as a language in its own right in the 13th century. Throughout the Middle Ages the Swedish language continued to be influenced by German. Later on in the 18th Century, French and English words were also borrowed. Today, English is thought to be the biggest current influence on the Swedish language.
The Swedish language is not necessarily harder to learn than English, but it is certainly not as widely studied. Most Swedish people born in the last 50 years are able to communicate very well in English; however, this should not be taken as licence to conduct all correspondence with Swedish business partners in English. Communicating with potential or existing business contacts in their native language can only help develop your business relationships.
