Turkish language - Did you know?

There are approximately 50-60 million native Turkish language speakers in various countries including; Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Turkey. Turkish, a Turkic language, is very similar to Azeri, Turkmen and Qashqai. Native speakers of these languages are often able to understand each other, however, when it comes to translation it is vital that you choose the right language for your target audience; getting this wrong will only cause unnecessary embarrassment. Contact us [link] now for further information.

Turkish was originally written in the Ottoman Turkish script. This changed in 1928 when the Arabic alphabet was replaced with a Latin version. Today, the Latin alphabet is widely used, but academics and those who learnt to read before 1928 can still read the Arabic version.

In 1932, after the Republic of Turkey was founded, the Turkish Language Association was set up in part to purify the Turkish language. Many words had been loaned from Arabic and Persian and this association set to replace these with Turkish equivalents. The association succeeded in removing a couple of hundred Arabic words from the language by banning the use of loan words in the press. The words which replaced these loan words were in the main new words. Today, the younger Turkish generation tends to use new expressions, while people born before 1940 use Arabic words.
