Bowers and Wilkins is a well respected and longstanding manufacturer of loudspeakers. Based in Worthing, West Sussex, B&W exports its products worldwide. Its Nautilus product, launched in 1993 after 5 years’ development, has been described as “possibly the best loudspeaker money can buy”.

Roevin is proud to have been Bowers & Wilkins’ main supplier of multi-language DTP services for almost ten years. Most B&W literature is translated into about a dozen languages, including Russian, Greek, Chinese and Japanese. In addition to typesetting and proofreading translations of user manuals and brochures received from the B&W units abroad, Roevin provides B&W with a complete project management package, liaising directly with overseas units and B&W’s head office. After compiling the English documentation (often collating various old manuals) Roevin’s project manager will request translation of any new text, as well as implementing amendments and processing queries from B&W’s local contacts.

Initial requests for new manuals or brochures come to Roevin from B&W’s marketing department but thereafter Roevin liaises directly with overseas distributors ensuring that any final amendments and the sign off are handled as efficiently as possible, critical when the deadline is fast approaching! Because of the highly technical nature of the texts involved, every manual and brochure undergoes a thorough checking process, and once approved, Roevin delivers print-ready files.
As well as undertaking desktop publishing for B&W, Roevin has also been requested to undertake desktop publishing for Rotel and Classe, a high-end Canadian audio manufacturer, whose products are sold through B&W’s worldwide network of distributors.
Roevin’s Birmingham office is delighted to welcome Gail Owen, who joined the team in April as Sales and Marketing Administrator. With a language degree from Royal Holloway, University of London (BA Joint Hons) Gail, 25, is fluent in Italian and Spanish with a working knowledge of French. During her time at Royal Holloway she spent 6 months living and studying in Havana, Cuba and a further year and a half studying cultural anthropology and working in Viterbo, Italy.

In her final year Gail specialised in Italian translation and since graduating has done some interpreting for Telford Borough Council. Gail joins Roevin from a customer service background and is looking forward to the opportunity to use her languages. One of Gail’s primary duties will be to take the lead on the development of Roevin’s website.
…and Roevin Says Goodbye to…Kam Sandhar
Kam Sandhar, Sales Manager at the Birmingham office, has decided not to return to work following the end of her maternity leave, in order to be with her baby daughter full time. We wish Kam all the best in her new role!
Promotion for Jasmin Schneider
Congratulations to Jasmin Schneider on her promotion to Office Manager at the Birmingham office. Jasmin joined Roevin in April 2005 after four years working for Kern Translations in Frankfurt and Paris and quickly established herself as a key member of the translation team demonstrating outstanding client liaison and project management skills.

Jasmin will continue to manage her existing client portfolio which includes Xerox, Toshiba International and Steris. A native German speaker, she has a Masters in Translation Studies from the University of Heidelberg and is fluent in German, English, French and Portuguese.
According to the 2001 Census, 582,400 (20.8% of the Welsh population) said they were able to speak Welsh. This is a significant increase from the 508,100 of 1991. Perhaps this is related to the increasing amount of people who are studying Welsh at secondary school and other institutions. Although predominantly spoken in Wales, Welsh is also spoken in Patagonia, Argentina by several hundred people.
In the larger cities today such as Cardiff and Swansea, the main language heard on the street is English, but in other areas, particularly the northern and western regions, Welsh remains strong.
Although Welsh often appears illegible and unpronounceable the spelling is entirely regular and phonetic. Once you have learnt the basics it is surprisingly easy to read and pronounce.

The Roevin “Excellence in Translation” award was presented by Liz Athey, Translation Operations Manager, at the Postgraduate Degree Congregations held at Aston University on 7 March 2006. The award, won by Sonja Krange, a native German speaker, was presented for the first time in 2005 and recognises outstanding achievement in the field of translation studies.

Christina Schaeffner, Director of Translation Studies at Aston, said “Sonja has consistently produced excellent work and fully deserves the prize”. Sonja has secured a position with a pharmaceutical company in Germany.
