Technical Authoring Services

In an increasingly competitive business world it is essential that your product is user friendly to your end consumer. Badly written, vague or poorly researched documentation could cause your end user difficulties and dissuade them from making future purchases. Perhaps you don’t have the budget to employ a full-time technical writer as a member of your staff; outsourcing to Roevin could be the perfect solution.

Roevin’s technical authoring service is respected for its comprehensive project management and track record in the provision of documentation for a wide range of industries.

Our experienced technical authors, available to work on- or off-site, are able to provide manuals in any format you require from hard copy to SGML/XML. Our extensive track record within a wide range of industries has given us familiarity with their particular specifications, for example ATA 100, AECMA 1000D and 2000M.

Our technical authors are also experienced in the use of controlled languages such as Simplified English which ensures consistency of terminology and eliminates ambiguity. Our experience enables us to look at existing documentation and, if necessary, give expert advice on how it could be improved. An extensive quality management process is in place throughout the lifecycle of the project.

The Technical Author. What does the role involve?

A Technical Author is a writer with technical product knowledge, who produces documentation that communicates technical information in terms that are easily understandable to the user. The information produced takes many forms, from a simple leaflet to a large complex manual. Today it is not uncommon for a technical authoring company to produce catalogues or manuals in CD ROM format or to work on complex web based systems.

Technical authors work in many different industries including aerospace, defence and automotive. It is vital that the technical author you use has experience in your specialist field. Our project managers are on hand to match the correct author to your project.

Technical authors often work closely with technical illustrators, ensuring the language used is relevant to the illustration provided.

2. What is the difference between a writer and a technical author?

A writer is often creative, producing either fictional or non fictional text to inspire a reader and convey a story, recount an event or describe an object. Although writers need to plan and research, their work is often creative and spontaneous. Technical authors are much more factual writers, who organise, research and deal with complex technical information. They are often required to simplify information and produce a format that can be readily understood by the end user.

3. Can any writer become a technical author?

A technical author needs to be able to learn new systems quickly, understand the technical concepts involved and is often an expert in a specific field, such as the aerospace industry. It is essential that the author knows enough about the subject matter to be able to fill in the missing gaps and create complete and comprehensive documentation. A writer who can assess large amounts of technical data and simplify complicated information could make a successful technical author.
