Technical Illustration

Technical illustration is an important part of the documentation that accompanies your product. Technical instructions and repair manuals are much clearer to the end user when accompanied by technical illustrations. Words explain, but illustrations provide a solid visual image, reducing the risk of misunderstanding and enhancing the effectiveness of your product. Furthermore, examples and graphics hold the reader’s interest and explain ideas which would otherwise be difficult to visualise.

The Translation People has over 15 years of experience in technical illustration, with in-house illustrators who have worked on both small projects of ten hours and large projects of up to four years, in numerous sectors including defence and aerospace.

Technical Illustration Project Management

  • Perhaps the most important step is approaching us here at The Translation People. The Translation People provides all clients with a dedicated project manager to co-ordinate the entire project from inception to completion, providing constant progress updates.
  • The Translation People will organise an initial consultation with you. For larger projects, your project manager will arrange a meeting to discuss the aim of the project and deadline requirements and gain general background information from you. At this point the final product and your expectations will be discussed, and where possible, your project manager will take away some technical drawings in order to gain an accurate idea of the work required.
  • Based on this initial consultation your project manager will provide you with a comprehensive quotation and timescale.
  • Once the quotation has been accepted, a second visit will be arranged. During this visit the project manager will clarify the finer details and gather all the information necessary for completing the project. The illustrator may visit the site to gain access to the equipment in question and to take any photos required. Our clients usually provide us with engineering drawings, 3D electronic files and written information from the Technical Author. The Translation People is also able to supply Technical Authors.
  • Your project manager will provide you with a schedule of work and ensure that the technical illustrations are delivered on time and to budget, keeping you fully updated along the way.

Why do you need a Technical Illustrator?

As technology advances it is often assumed that computers can be programmed to create an illustration from a diagram. Regardless of the advances in technology it is imperative that the importance of human input is not underestimated. A professional technical illustrator makes an illustration aesthetically pleasing and more importantly, understandable to the human eye.

Technical Illustration. Did you know?

“A picture…” or in the technical world of today, an illustration “can say a thousand words”.

Historically, pictures and illustrations preceded words; the first recorded information appeared in the form of rock inscriptions in the Palaeolithic period, 30,000 BC to 10,000 BC. Although a simple mode of communication these inscriptions/illustrations proved to be very effective. Today, illustrations are not always as simple as they were in the Palaeolithic period, but they are still a powerful and essential communication tool.
